Help Make A Difference

Hi Friends,

I have some news that I am excited to share with you!  I received an invitation to join a small team from Mountain Christian Church that will travel to Kenya, Africa in February 2020.  This team is all women and we serve together as vendors at the Havre de Grace Farmers Market.  Without a doubt, this is my call.  All my life I’ve wanted to help others in some capacity and when this opportunity came about, I knew I had to be a part of this.  We are so grateful for the chance to take our passion for small businesses and serving others to another part of the world where we can encourage, teach, and love others.

In Kenya, our team will travel to Nairobi (one of the largest cities in Africa) and Turkana, a rural desert-like area.  Nearly one million people live in the Mathare slum in Nairobi, an area of less than a square mile. Life is extremely difficult, with rivers of sewage in the streets and most families living without electricity, running water, or toilets and crowding as many as 10 people into one-room huts made of scrap wood, corrugated tin, or mud. In each area, we will partner with missionaries from Missions of Hope International (MOHI), an organization that is transforming lives throughout Kenya.  Mountain Christian has partnered closely with MOHI for many years.  Please read more about Missions of Hope International (MOHI) in the enclosed flyer and at

Through my faith in God and His guidance, we will be teaching in the new baking classroom at the Skills Training Center in efforts teach skills and foster micro businesses.  For example, simply making bread not only provides better nourishment for their families, but also offers these women an opportunity to earn an income by selling products to their community.  We will also have a chance to work with the staff of MOHI to teach them new recipes and cooking tips, which they have requested.  You know me, having the chance to share my love of baking and cooking coupled with the chance to help someone make a better life for themselves is a dream come true!  The flyer shares more information about additional ways we hope to serve.

I am so grateful to be called to this mission.  The encouragement and support from my family and friends will give me the strength I’m sure I’ll need as I encounter difficulties.  Stepping out into the unknown, for me, will require bravery.  As a small business woman, sacrificing time and opportunities will bring burdens but ones I know are worth the benefits our team will bring to this community.  Will you help send me on this journey?

The trip is also costly and I hope to raise at least $3700 to cover expenses. If you would like to financially support this trip and my calling to go and serve and love others in Kenya, you may do so in two ways:

  • Write a check to Mountain Christian Church and mail your donation along with the form on the enclosed flyer to Mountain Christian Church 1824 Mountain Road Joppa, MD 21085. These instructions are also on the flyer. Please include “Diane Starkell – Kenya” on the check memo.
  • Online at and select “Missions of Hope Kenya Baking Ministry”. On the next page, click on “Donate to a Participant” and then select my name from the drop down menu.

Since part of the cost of my trip is for airfare, we hope to purchase our tickets as soon as possible. If you are able to support me financially, please do so by December 1. This will help meet the goal to purchase airline tickets in a timely manner. Financial contributions will be accepted after that date as well. All donations are tax-deductible. I thank you for supporting this cause and our efforts to empower others.

With Love and Hope,
Diane Starkell
